I get the whole independent thing, and hats off to Tim Cahill for trying to capitalize on people’s general dislike of the two mainstream parties. And to Christy Mihos for trying to capitalize on it before he was for it. And to Ralph Nader for trying to capitalize on it in 2004 and 2008. In Massachusetts especially, with 50+ percent of registered voters registered “Unenrolled”, it’s clear that a solid independent campaign might tap this year’s “special” sense of outrage, despair, frustration, and, well, independence. The Tea Party sure is tapping it… Don’t Tread On Me! No Taxation Without Representation! Let’s Preserve Liberty!

But… beyond the rhetoric and platitudes and emotional wavemaking… what are independents FOR? We can’t delude ourselves that it’s a good thing that 50% of Massachusetts voters are “independent”. It’s a cop out. What do they stand FOR? What do they believe in? What policies would emanate from a movement of independents? What would their governance look like?

Now, I don’t mean this as a harsh criticism… and I think it’s spectacular that Jim is challenging Galvin, who is one of those quiet villains hiding in the shadows of government while using taxpayer money to sell his image as a gentle, measured good-government voice.

But what are you building by running? I like that you give us an alternative ballot choice… but the building of a real independent alternative vehicle is much harder than one campaign or a string of campaigns. And we desperately need a real independent political alternative. Not a choice on the ballot, but a real choice that exists and thrives and gives us a voice BETWEEN elections. A vehicle that transforms the political system and helps to transform the economic and social systems that are killing us.

When do we get serious and build that alternative? I invite you to join us.

Jim Henderson has been a member of the GRP for a number of years. I wish that he had decided to run for the office of Secretary of the Commonwealth as a member of our party.

I have worked with Jim in the past. I am confident that he will run a campaign that will be consistent with the values of our party.

I hope that he will consider seeking our party’s endorsement (The GRP can only nominate members of our party. However, we can endorse those who are not enrolled in other parties.) If he does, I believe that we should consider endorsing his candidacy.
