Well it’s 21 days into May, and Green Mass Group has been delinquent in getting out a push for our second featured cause for our We, The Media campaign/series. But it’s better late than never, and it’s even better that May’s push is well-timed to support an absolutely critical independent media institution during their membership drive.
Free Speech TV is one of those rare institutions that provides a strong sense of hope that progressives and thoughtful people of all stripes might some day find a way to get their stories out into every corner of the country and beyond:
Launched in 1995, Free Speech TV is an independent, publicly-supported, non-profit TV multi-platform digital media pioneer. Using both television and the Internet, Free Speech TV inspires viewers to become civically engaged to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable society.
ACT NOW! ALL CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED DURING THIS DRIVE WILL BE MATCHED BY 60% BY A GROUP OF LOYAL DONORS!!
Your Membership is very important:
Television networks that receive money from the government are accountable to the government. Networks that get money from advertisers are accountable to those corporations. As viewer-powered television, Free Speech TV is accountable only to you.
FSTV has pioneered the use of available airspace and technology to broadcast independent, progressive news, analysis, ideas, and values. Moving into the low-end satellite framework has given them access to open minds across the country, and advancing breakthrough programming like Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now!, Laura Flanders’ GRIT tv, and the Thom Hartmann Program:
On television, Free Speech TV reaches 30 million U.S. homes, broadcasting fulltime on DISH Network (channel 9415) and part-time on 200 community cable affiliates. Viewers can search the TV schedule online and subscribe to a weekly E-Guide that highlights upcoming programs.
On the Internet, Free Speech TV serves up video to a large international audience via its own website, social networking sites, media-sharing sites, and viral person-to-person distribution. Its website features both videos-on-demand and a 24/7 online channel. Viewers can subscribe to RSS feeds and are encouraged to join online conversations about the issues raised in the videos.
If you have not experienced the thrill of finding hard-hitting reporting and commentary on cable television thanks to supportive public access stations, we recommend you get in touch with your local access station and ask them to broadcast from Free Speech TV’s satellite feed — at least the morning showing of Democracy Now! This is a very powerful communication medium, and though many people watch Free Speech TV on the internet, getting it aired locally is an important insertion of new ideas and information into the public dialogue.
