Organized labor is still getting its ass kicked.  Profitable companies are threatening workers with off-shoring and plant closures if they don’t agree to concessions.  Public sector unions are being demonized as the cause of our budget problems.  The bad economy is hammering workers everywhere.  And Obama Administration has been a disappointment to say the least on labor’s priorties.

People like Hugh Giordano are leading the way.  As is every union and union member that is willing to take the strong, independent stand to defend working people.  Its not a coincidence the UE is winning where other unions are losing with their independence and militancy.  A real independent political party can build the base for labor in a way that a corporate and elite dominated Democratic Party cannot.

There are so many opportunities for Green activists to join in labor struggles and for labor activists to join our party and widen its base.  Labor unions form the heart of any real shift in our economy toward greater fairness, democracy, and I would say sustainability. The connections and relationships need only to be made and nurtured, and Hugh’s example is very powerful in that respect.  I will definitely share his words with union members, organizers, activists, and supporters I know.
